Why Do We Have Earwax?

Ear wax (medical name cerumen) is made by specialised glands in the outer two thirds of the ear canal. It helps protect the ear by moisturising the skin in the ear canal, providing a physical barrier against infection, and by being acidic it has antibacterial properties. Because it is sticky, it helps to catch dust, pollen and small insects and prevent them from establishing themselves in your ears! The skin in your ear canal grows differently to the skin that covers the rest of our body, and grows along the ear canal from the ear drum to the canal entrance. It acts like a conveyor belt, bringing the ear wax, and any dust, pollen or other debris with it, out of the ear. This way, the ear canal cleans itself naturally.

Why Do Ear Wax Blockages Happen?

Typically, ear wax blocks the ear canal and becomes impacted when it is pushed back against the natural outward movement that is part of the natural cleaning process. This can be done using cotton buds, matchsticks, paper clips, rolled up tissue, hair pins amongst other objects. Other causes of ear wax impaction can be narrow or winding ear canals, excessive, excessively dry or excessively sticky ear wax production. Everybody has an S bend in their ear canals - this is to reduce the chance of twigs and other objects from perforating the ear drum. However, ear wax can build up on very sharp bends in the canal. Where the ear canal is very narrow, there is less space for ear wax to accumulate, and this can lead to frequent ear wax blockages. Excessive, sticky, or dry ear wax production can also lead to impacted ear wax. The most obvious symptom of a blocked ear is a partial or total loss of hearing, but other symptoms can include pain, itching, a feeling of fullness, or hissing, whooshing, buzzing or ringing sounds.

How To Get Rid Of Ear Wax

Unfortunately, the size and shape of your ear canal, as well as the amount and type of ear wax is genetically determined. In order to reduce ear wax build up we recommend applying one squirt of Earol (a sterile, sealed olive oil spray) into each ear once or twice a week. If you have a blocked ear, we recommend you apply two squirts of Earol twice or three times a day for three or four days and then attend one of our expert microsuction ear wax removal clinics. You can book an appointment at our london microsuction ear wax removal clinic here. Please don't put cotton wool in after applying Earol, as it will just absorb the olive oil and stop it from doing its work. We don't recommend self-syringing as this can push the ear wax further into your ear. We particularly recommend you avoid ear candles, as these do not remove ear wax and can potentially cause serious problems. We have an article on ear candles and their pitfalls here.

If you'd like to read about the various methods of ear wax removal, including syringing and microsuction, we have an article on different ear wax removal methods here.

If You Wear Hearing Aids

If you wear hearing aids, to prevent oil and wax from blocking up your hearing aids just apply the Earol at night, and then wipe out the entrance of your ear canal with a tissue in the morning before you put your hearing aids in. You'll ideally need to use Earol for five to eight days before your microsuction appointment.

Ear Wax Microsuction In London EN5 From £50

So, after reading the above if you have wax in your ear and would like it removed safely without any water being syringed or jetted into your ear, you may want to choose to have your ears microsuctioned.

We provide the most affordable ear wax microsuction service in London EN5, provided by HCPC-registered Audiologists and NMC Registered Nurses. We take payment for the appointment up front - we are sorry that we have to do this, but many patients have booked and not turned up, which is frustrating for other patients who cannot get an appointment.

Our Practitioner will inspect your ears using surgical loupes or an otoscope to determine whether your ear canals are full of wax and if microsuction is therefore necessary.

If there is no ear wax, we will give you advice and/or a hearing test as appropriate.

If there is wax, we will remove the ear wax expertly using a low power medical suction unit with a tiny, sterile 2 mm suction tube on the end. This is so gentle, it feels like barely even a kiss on the cheek. Sometimes, despite applying Earol for several days, the ear wax is too stubborn to be removed by microsuction, so we may use special disposable instruments, such as a Jobson Horne Probe, or a St Barts or Rosen Cerumen Hook. Whatever method we use, you safety is our top priority at all times. If you would like to book a microsuction appointment in London EN5, click here.

We never use a Propulse Ear Irrigator, which has now largely replaced the ear syringe, as according to the British Medical Journal (article here) irrigation or syringing is associated with a high risk of complications, such as failure of wax removal or further impaction of the wax, ear infection, trauma to the ear canal, or perforation of the ear drum. Other complications of syringing that have been reported are pain, tinnitus, vertigo (dizziness), and loss of balance or hearing.

About Edgware

Edgware is a district of northern Greater London, in the London Borough of Barnet. Edgware is centred 9.5 miles (15.3 km) north-northwest of Charing Cross and has its own commercial centre. Edgware has a generally suburban character, typical of the rural-urban fringe. It was an ancient parish in the county of Middlesex. The community benefits from some elevated woodland on a high ridge marking the Hertfordshire border of gravel and sand. Edgware is identified in the London Plan as one of the capital's 35 major centres. Edgware is principally a shopping and residential area and one of the northern termini of the Northern line. It has a bus garage, a shopping centre called the Broadwalk, a library, a hospital—Edgware Community Hospital, and two streams—Edgware Brook and Deans Brook, both tributaries of a small brook known as Silk Stream, which in turn merges with the River Brent at Brent Reservoir.

Edgware is a Saxon name meaning Ecgi's weir. Ecgi was a Saxon and the weir relates to a pond where Ecgi's people caught fish. Edgware parish formed part of Hendon Rural District from 1894. It was abolished in 1931 and formed part of the Municipal Borough of Hendon until 1965.The Romans made pottery at Brockley Hill, thought by some to be the site of Sulloniacis. Canons Park, to the north-west, was developed as an estate by James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos and was the site of his great palace Cannons.

(from Wikipedia)

The construction of the M1 motorway across this area made less visual impact than might have been expected owing to the deep cutting in which most of it lies. Some building estates have been planted north of Edgware Way in the post-war period, but they have been largely confined to the area between Edgwarebury Lane and the main railway line. The borough council's Spur Road estate was built only after bitter local opposition; it is dominated by five tall blocks of flats, the first of which, of eleven stories, was opened in 1957.

The Edgware General Hospital is outside the old parish at Burnt Oak, Hendon. The Anglican Convent of St. Mary at the Cross (Sisters of the Poor), until 1931 known as the Convent of St. Mary of Nazareth, was founded in 1865 in Shoreditch by the Revd. H. D. Nihill. In 1873 land was bought at Edgware to the north of Hale Lane, and by degrees the work of the convent and its hospital at Shoreditch were given up. In 1937 a new hospital block, providing 50 extra beds, was opened at Edgware. It is now a home for sick and incurable children, who are taken in up to the age of 18 and then kept for life if they have no other home.

(from British History Online)

Known to most Londoners simply as the name of a road and one of three final destinations for north-bound Northern Line trains, Edgware marks the northern edge of the suburban sprawl of Greater London.

Historically, it was a small town located along the Roman road between London and St Albans, a notable curiosity being that the place comprised of not one parish but two, the boundary being the road itself. Even today, with the area having been developed out of all recognition with the coming of suburbia between the two world wars, this sense of division can still be observed, for Edgware on the eastern side of the old Roman road is part of the London Borough of Barnet, while on the western side one finds oneself in the London Borough of Harrow.

What you call that old road, nowadays part of the A5, depends very much on whereabouts in London you are - in Edgware, it's simply the High Street, and does not actually become the Edgware Road until close to Marble Arch.

One brief historical note: Fans of the eighteenth-century composer Handel may be interested to note that he lived in Edgware for a short time; he performed on the organ in St Lawrence's Chuch on Whitchurch Lane, and nearby Canons Park once housed a mansion built by one of his patrons, the first Duke of Chandos. Praised by Defoe and satirised by Pope, that building was demolished long ago, with the pillars at the entrance to the exclusive Canons Drive still standing as reminders of a bygone age.

(from About Britain)

To the north of Edgware you will find Elstree and Borehamwood, while to the west you will find Stanmore. South of Edgware is Queensbury, while southwest of Edgware is Harrow and Wembley. To the Northeast is Barnet, and to the East is Finchley. Within the boundaries of Edgware are Burnt Oak and Colindale, while on its eastern side, Hale Lane joins Edgware with Mill Hill.

About Mill Hill

Mill Hill is a mostly residential area in the borough of Barnet, with Edgware to the west and Finchley to the east. The Broadway referred to in the station's name is a pleasant local high street that stretches away to the east, with plenty of independent stores as well as a few big-name shops and restaurants. A little further west, a cluster of green spaces - Mill Hill Park, Arrandene Open Space and The Mill Field - provides some balance to the local shops and housing.

Microsuction vs. Ear Syringing

Many people in North West London are finding that their local GP surgery no longer offers ear syringing. No doubt this is partly due to a lack of funding, but also because ear syringing is inherently less safe than ear micro suction. Possible side effects of ear syringing or irrigation are ear infection, hearing loss, tinnitus, perforation of the ear drum, and further impaction of the ear wax (i.e. the ear wax gets pushed even harder against the ear drum). Is it any wonder that people are going off walk in ear syringing in London and are seeking out microsuction ear wax removal instead? Unfortunately, the sharp rise in demand has meant that NHS micro suction clinics are now unable to meet the need and waiting times are often over two to three months.

You no longer need to wait months for micro suction. Why not save time by going private? It's not as expensive as you think. Simply head to our booking page and you could be saying goodbye to your wax blockage this week!

Eight Centres For Speedy Effective Ear Wax Removal London

Eight Centres For Speedy Effective Ear Wax Removal London

Updated 19th January 2019

Our group of eight centres for speedy effective ear wax removal London employs excellent highly trained Ear Wax Removal Micro Suction Clinic Location MapAudiologists and Medical Nurses ensuring that we clear blocked ears and improve hearing loss without any side effects.

Hearing Loss Improvements With Microsuction

We use the latest technology and advances in techniques used by our professionals to examine your ear canals, identifying the location and degree of wax build up.  We do this using instruments in our consulting rooms such as microscopes that can either be large floor standing units, or can be incorporated into glasses, in which case they are known as operating loupes. The operating microscope is combined with a powerful light source and is able to easily and painlessly locate the earwax, and a fine micro suction pump is used to gently draw out the offending wax.

This process is delicate and requires a detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the ear, and additional training in use of the technical equipment to ensure safety during the process.

Very often the outcome of the microsuction treatment result in clients reporting hearing loss improvements.

Unlike other ear wax removal clinics in London, which only use micro suction, our ear wax specialist practitioners are also trained to use manual instruments, ensuring that our success rate is the highest in the industry. At earwaxremoval.net we really are the ear wax removal specialists.

microsuction clinic in pinner - looking for where to get ear wax removal in pinner?

I have had terrible ear pain and could not hear a thing. Ear syringing did not work and I was having to wait 16 weeks for an appointment on the NHS, I phoned this clinic last week and had an appointment today, within 30 minutes my ears were cleared and I can now hear properly for the first time in ages.
Mr Levy was fantastic. he worked really hard to make sure all of the wax was removed. He was really nice and kind.

Great Ear Wax Removal Service in Welwyn Garden City

I had a blocked ear for around 7 days, so annoying it was. Went to doctors he just gave me drops, which was using for few days, then brought olive oil drops , as people had said this may help, tried to get in doctors for a ear wax removal, but would of had to wait until 5th Sep, useless !!!
So I searched Google and found earwaxremoval.net, got a appointment for the evening time, well what can I say, the best ever money spent, to have this done, Jason was very helpful , and got on with his job on micro suction ear wax removal. I was able to ear again straight after the 20mins it took, my husband even got one ear done also.
So two VERY Happy Customers !! I will recommend going there to get this done if need be, no point in waiting around for doctors appointments when you can nip there, ok you have to pay, but that’s what life is all about spending money on things that are important to yourselves
Thanks Again for your efficient work Jason

No Side Effects

Other methods of wax removal such as ear syringing where a syringe which is filled with warm water is inserted into the ear  and the water ejected into the ear canals to encourage the wax to be freed and to flow out of the ear into a kidney dish held under the ear.  More recently this process may be combined where the practitioner will use an ear irrigator pump with a jet tip. The pump has adjustable pressure, but the process is essentially the same. Many people have had their ears syringed or irrigated many times without any issues, and the process is usually free on the NHS.

However, often the process has to be preceded by a period (usually two weeks) of using ear drops to soften the wax as it does not work well with hardened ear wax.  Also, if the angle of the jet is not quite right it can send the wax further into the ear resulting pain; possibly causing tinnitus; perforating the eardrum.

If the amount of ear wax build up is so great, a perforated eardrum may be missed and the process could end up causing water, bacteria, wax and dead skin cells to be flushed past the eardrum into the middle ear, potentially causing a painful infection.

The method of ear ear syringing is not recommended following ear surgery., or if the eardrum has previously been perforated as any existing weak spot could be damaged again.

Great service for a very reasonable price. My ears were messed up for 6 weeks after I had them syringed to remove impacted ear wax. They were far worse than they were before the syringe process. After microsuction they are fixed. I will never have them syringed again, but will instead be making an appointment to see Jason every time I am in the UK.

“Would Choose This Again”

I needed my ears syringed but the dr’s couldn’t fit me in for almost a month. There was no way I could wait that long so looked online and microsuction came up. Once there I was made to feel welcome and relaxed. The procedure was quick and easy and my hearing came back instantly. I recommend this to anyone who needs it and would choose this again if required.
