Two Dozen Interesting Facts About Colindale

  • Newspaper Haven: Colindale was home to the iconic British Library Newspaper Archive (Colindale Avenue) for over 80 years before it moved to Boston Spa in 2013. At its peak, it held 750 million editions.
  • RAF Birthplace: The RAF Museum London in Colindale sits on the site of the former Hendon Aerodrome, one of the first airfields in the UK. Many WWI pilots trained here.
  • Tube Name Mystery: Colindale Underground Station (Northern Line) opened in 1924, but the name “Colindale” was actually invented by the railway company — it wasn’t a historic village name, but a blend of “Colin” (a local landowner’s name) + “Dale”.
  • Japan’s Wartime Visit: During WWI, a Japanese naval squadron visited Colindale’s aerodrome in 1917 — one of the first official Japan-UK military aviation links.
  • Grahame-White Factory: Aviation pioneer Claude Grahame-White built a massive aircraft factory in Colindale (1915). After the war, it became a bus depot and film studio — home to early Ealing Studios comedies.
  • First Police Air Wing: In 1930, the UK’s first police air unit operated from Colindale’s aerodrome. The Met Police flew De Havilland aircraft to chase criminals — way ahead of its time.
  • Spanish Flu Epicentre? In 1918, the Royal Air Force hospital in Colindale treated hundreds of soldiers from the Spanish Flu pandemic. Some records suggest the Hendon/Colindale area had one of London’s earliest clusters.
  • Buddhist Temple Surprise: The London Buddhist Vihara (first Theravada Buddhist monastery in the UK) moved to Colindale in 1994. It was originally based in Chelsea.
  • “Baby” Road Names: Colindale has streets named after children’s book characters — like Peter Pan Road and Wendy Close — built on former farmland in the 1930s.
  • First Sainsbury’s ‘Superstore’: The UK’s first out-of-town Sainsbury’s superstore opened in Colindale in 1976. Locals were amazed by self-service trolleys and a car park the size of a football pitch.
  • WWII Bomb Decoy: During the Blitz, open fields in Colindale were used as a decoy airfield with fake lights to lure German bombers away from central London. It worked — several bombs fell harmlessly on mud.
  • Oriental City Ghost: The famed Oriental City (Yaohan Plaza) — a huge Japanese mall in Colindale — closed in 2003. Today, the site is the Bang Bang Oriental food hall, but locals still call it “the old Yaohan”.
  • Colindale has its own ghost pilot: The RAF Museum in Colindale is haunted by Squadron Leader Stanley Collett, who was killed when his aircraft crashed between two hangars on June 30, 1934. Security officers have reported seeing unidentified men, hearing whistling and muffled music, and feeling unaccountable juddering shaking items in glass showcases.
  • There’s an intensely cold “eerie atmosphere” near the old hangars: Paranormal investigator Kevin Desmond documented that the area between the Grahame-White hangars and the modern housing estate gives off an intensely cold atmosphere “unrelated to weather conditions”.
  • A missing wooden carving was found 100 miles away: The RAF Museum curator Andy Simpson tracked down a rare wooden carving of the Grahame-White logo, built around 1916. It had been mysteriously removed and was found being kept at RAF Stanbridge over 100 miles from Colindale.
  • Grahame Park Estate was built on a haunted airfield: The 1970s “Brick Brutalist” housing estate sits directly on the site of the former Hendon Aerodrome, where multiple fatal crashes occurred and paranormal activity has been reported.
  • The estate is one of the UK’s largest council estates: Grahame Park (now called Colindale Estate) comprises 1,177 residential units, making it the second-largest council estate in the United Kingdom. The first residents moved in during October 1971.
  • Aviation pioneer’s logo mysteriously vanished for decades: The Grahame-White wooden carving was actually removed deliberately by the RAF when vacating the site “in order to protect it from vandalism” — but its location remained a mystery for years until documents from the Defence Land Sales were uncovered.
  • The estate was designed by notable architects: Grahame Park was designed by Sir Roger Walters and Gordon Wigglesworth in the distinctive “Brick Brutalist” style, featuring low-rise flat-roofed blocks and bold geometric forms.
  • Street names still honour the airfield’s past: The layout and road names of Colindale Estate deliberately reference the site’s history as a pioneering airfield and RAF training base during both World Wars.
  • A senior aircraftsman saw a ghost in 1972: A senior aircraftsman reported twice seeing a figure of a man wearing an “old-style flying jacket and boots” at the RAF Museum site in 1972.
  • The area between hangars witnessed the first fatal crash: The first fatal accident at the RAF Museum site occurred on June 30, 1934. The pilot Mr Lea was injured, but his observer Squadron Leader Stanley Collett was burned to death in “the corner between the enclosure and the machine park”.
  • Oriental City was a mecca for London’s East Asian community: Before becoming Bang Bang Oriental Food Hall, Colindale was home to Oriental City — a huge complex that served as a cultural hub for London’s East Asian community until its closure in 2008.
  • The estate spans what was once a world-famous aerodrome: Grahame Park was built on former parts of Hendon Aerodrome, one of the first and most famous airfields in the world, where aviation pioneers including Claude Grahame-White himself once flew.
